The Highlands Heat Competitive program is designed to accommodate players that want a more challenging setting than the recreational program and have the skill and desire to develop their soccer game in a setting of competitive matches against skilled opponents. HSC continues to recruit for players for existing teams and for (new) additional teams as skilled players allow. Tryouts are normally held in late May although players may join teams at any time at the discretion of the coach if there are spaces on the team roster. The Competitive Program consists of two seasons: Fall (August – November) and Spring (February - June). Note that participation in tryouts does not guarantee a place on a competitive soccer team. Selections are based on suitable skill levels and available openings on a particular team.

Q:
What does a typical competitive season consist of?
A: Competitive team games generally come in two categories: Tournament games and Tri-cities League games. A typical season would normally include 2-3 tournaments and 6-8 league games. Teams generally practice twice a week during the seasons and play league games on Saturday and / or Sunday afternoons. A tournament will typically take most of a weekend. Practices are normally 1½ hours in length on weekday evenings. Players are expected to attend all practices and games except when prior academic or family travel commitments prevent attendance. A significant difference in the competitive program is that playing time is based on performance, skill level and participation at practices. Parents should be made aware that during the course of any season, the head coach has the freedom to conduct team activities as he/she sees fit.
Q: Do
the teams travel outside the area to play games?
A: All league games will be held in the Tri-cities with half of the games held in Abingdon. Most of the tournaments will also be local, usually hosted in Bristol or Johnson City. Some teams may choose to travel to other tournaments as far away as Boone, Roanoke or Charlotte, but this is usually limited to once per season and is always a joint decision between the coach and the parents.
